A lot of people throw parties. Here's an idea where they can still get a lot of candy (which all kids love).
Find a book or series or something that they enjoy that's fictional that has some sort of big character in it that you can dress up as.
For example. When I was little there was a book trilogy with the character "Bunnicula" (a vampire bunny). I went as "Bunnicula" and my father was "The Celery That Stalks at Midnight" (which was the title for the 3rd book). He had a old green trenchcoat and taped pieces of celery to it. I loved it and is was great to see my father taking an interest in something I was into at that time.

Early is okay. Others have offered the usual things. Depending on your children's ages, you might want to get them involved with doing decorations, and after that do up something different. Like a theme party...maybe Harry Potter or ah ha! Good old faeries and princes. or something fun and mythical.

Have them start planning to turn your home into a haunted house.
This site has info on building your own Halloween graveyard:

Kids love decorating for stuff like that and you can probably get them to do most of the work.

Take them to the US to see how they do it! I went a couple of years ago in October and the house decorations were phenomenal.
