For anyone who's ever travelled to Iran, what is it like? Is it safe? How was your experience? Good? Bad? Are the people friendly? Is it a good country for tourism? Is it possible to backpack in Iran? If you've ever backpacked in Iran, what was your experience like? Good? Bad? Are there any restrictions on dress for men? All answers are appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your answer.

I never said that all Middle Eastern countries are the same or stereotyped anyone from that region. I just don't know much about travelling to Iran and was curious about safety and backpacking experiences.

I agree with you, there should be a seperate section for Iran. If you notice there's nothing for Syria either.

Seriously, it depends on which city you go to. For sake of the answer, i'll use Tehran as an example.
Of course it's safe. In smaller cities, however, it's better to know somebody because Americans are seen as subject to scams.
I guess i can't tell you how it'd be for you since i have family there and i'm fluent in Farsi, but especially in Tehran everybody is very friendly. The majority of the population is young, mostly 15 to mid-20s, and believe me, they hate their government just as much as Americans are afraid.
And backpacking, jeez in winter they have the BEST ski places everrrrr. The Northern cities, closer to the Caspian Sea have really pretty mountains that had parks built on them and freshwater rivers nearby...
Only restrictions for men: short sleeved shirt and long pants. That's pretty much it. If you wear like a wifebeater and shorts, yeahhh they won't be too happy about that. Of course if you're American you can just ramble on about not knowing about the restrictions and Americanize your way out, but i wouldn't risk it.

My recommendation, go to Tehran. Everytime i go the city is getting prettier and cleaner and more modernized.
Maybe i just feel this way cos i'm Iranian and i really miss everything about Iran?
:D
I hope you go, just to eliminate the stereotype that all Middle Eastern countries are the same.
