I just got this computer from my father and its pretty old 3 of 4 years. He had a friend to fix it because we were having some issues and i think in the process this friend installed a newsound card. Well this computer is so old that I had to install tons of updates, and after i did this my computer had no MB so i decided to uninstall the server pack 2. And when i did my sound complelty stop functioning. I've tried several times to reinstall the driver and it will not let me. I never got the installation cd because this computer was given to me. I complelty unstalled everything from my computer ater it stopped working hoping to reinstall it. I really don't know what to do now. I have no sound and I don't know what to do and how to fix it. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!

Your sound card may have built-in driver support with Service Pack 2, so this may be why you're having problems. One possible solution for Windows XP is to boot the PC into Safe Mode (Press F8 while the PC is rebooting).

Then go to (Control Panel -> System -> Hardware ->) Device Manager and uninstall everything under "Sound, video and game controllers." When your PC reboots, XP should auto-detect the sound card.

If that doesn't work, you may have to check:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups

Look in each Directory (starts at 0000) and read the .INF file for the incorrect driver that Windows is trying to load and delete that Directory. Good luck!

What is the sound card, onboard or plug in?

If its a sound blaster card, Windows should pick it up easily. If it doesn't automatically install it for you, simply go to http://creative.com/support/ find your model of card and download the drivers and installation for it. If you have to, open up the case, pull out the card and read the model number on it.

Get the correct download from the Creative site, and run it. Your sound should be back.
