A tyrant is a single individual holding vast, if not absolute power through a state or in an organization.

The term carries connotations of a harsh and cruel ruler who places his/her own interests or the interests of a small oligarchy over the best interests of the general population which they govern or control.
( oligarchy - form of government where political power effectively rests with a small, elite segment of society )

The word derives from Latin tyrannus, from Greek τύραννος tyrannos.

I'll tell you the meaning of tyranny by sharing with you how people really feel about them. I have been told, when conducting a survey, that most people would leave a tyrant dead on the ground if he/she had a heart attack in front of them. When asked why and sort of guided to their answer by my reasoning, they said that they want the tyrant to go away because they hurt people. They thought that it is beneficial for society to "do away with the tyrant" so that they will stop hurting others. Essentially, they were saying that hurting someone to stop them from hurting others, bringing negativity, and creating stress is a good thing. I mean, I am not planning anything yet but some could be. LMAO.

A tyrant is a single individual holding vast, if not absolute power through a state or in an organization. The term carries connotations of a harsh and cruel ruler who place their own interests or the interests of a small oligarchy over the best interests of the general population which they govern or control. This mode of rule is referred to as tyranny. Many individual rulers or government officials get accused of tyranny, with the label almost always a matter of controversy.

The word derives from Latin tyrannus, from Greek τύραννος tyrannos. There may be a connection with the biblical Hebrew word seren = "captain of the Philistines":

A 'tyrant' is an absolute ruler who governs without restrictions.

The word 'tyrant' comes to us from the Latin word 'tyrannus' meaning lord, master, sovereign, absolute ruler.

"In the exact sense, a 'tyrant' is an individual who arrogates to himself the royal authority without having a right to it. This is how the Greeks understood the word 'tyrant': they applied it indifferently to good and bad princes whose authority was not legitimate." (Rousseau)

Famous 'tyrants' of today would be people like Saddam Hessian, Hitler, Mao Tse-tung or any person who would take power and rule over people without regard for what is good for the country and people.
