I have become a huge fan of sherlock holmes of the last year, sitting down to read either the novels or short stories every so often. I've read almost all Doyle's works with Holmes as the lead and know it's time to take a break from Holmes for a while to read about someone else... any suggestions? thanks

If you like the cerebral type of mystery, with more to the characters than relying on the blood and guts of the actual crime, then you'll really like some of the British mystery writers.

Dorothy Sayers' books date back to the 1930s, but are absolutely fascinating for the characters and plot developments. "Five Red Herrings" is one of her best, and features a continuing character, Lord Peter Wimsey.

P.D. James is another British author, more modern but excellent technique, fascinating plots, and rich characterizations.

If you have any taste for history at all, try the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters, whose real name was Edith Pargeter. This series takes place in the 12th century, and the crimes are not as spectactular as something on C.S.I. but her details of daily life and her perception of the characters along with the portrayals are truly excellent.
