Yes, during the old days of Yahoo (when the internet was young) I met a number of people who frequented the same chat room that I did. There used to be large chat conventions all over the U.S. I still remain friends with a few of those I've met in fact it was through chat that I met a very distant cousin who has the same ansestors as I do...he was originally from Scotland but lives in Canada...

Yes, but the results are dubious. It is nice to meet someone when you are attracted to each other at more than a physical level, but after meeting if the physical attraction (some call it chemistry) isn't present then it was all for naught.
I've heard people say that how we pick mates (using the physical as a culling method) is flawed, but my experience with reverse methods has been at least as bad.
Perhaps off your intent of the question, but generally relevant.

Once I chatted over IM. Never in person... Unless you count those I know who do Yahoo! Answers like my dad, ect... then I talk to them all the time.
