Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. Singapore subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe.
Ethnic groups:
Chinese 76.8%, Malay 13.9%, Indian 7.9%, other 1.4%
(2000 census)

Singapore, a highly-developed and successful free-market economy, enjoys a remarkably open and corruption-free environment, stable prices, and a per capita GDP equal to that of the four largest West European countries. The economy depends heavily on exports, particularly in consumer electronics and information technology products. It was hard hit in 2001-03 by the global recession, by the slump in the technology sector, and by an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, which curbed tourism and consumer spending. Fiscal stimulus, low interest rates, a surge in exports, and internal flexibility led to vigorous growth in 2004-06, with real GDP growth averaging 7% annually. The government hopes to establish a new growth path that will be less vulnerable to the global demand cycle for information technology products - it has attracted major investments in pharmaceuticals and medical technology production - and will continue efforts to establish Singapore as Southeast Asia's financial and high-tech hub.

Singapore is unique in that it is actually an independent city-state and a country unto itself. It is also the smallest country in Southeast Asia. What sets Singapore apart from the rest of the Asian cities is that it is very clean. You're not allowed to litter in the streets (litter as in spit, throw chewing gum or throw small garbage.) If you do and get caught, a penalty will be imposed on you. I'm not sure how much but you will be fined. That's how strict the Singaporean government is about public cleanliness.

Hope this helps!

Singapore is by far one of the youngest country. this year being only 42 years old. It doesn't have natural resources and has strong relations with many other countries. Also, Singapore is a very small country and is just above the Equator. Singapore has a mixture of different races and religion.

You got couple of good responses but I haven't heard much about SL's Olympics exploits. I believe that what you are saying is right. Does your country takes part in Common Wealth Games & Asian Games? I am totally unaware of SL being South Asia's power house, which sweeps medals in Athletics, ahead of India. We all are pathetic in Olympics & have won meager number of medals, yet its not that India hasn't won any medals or less medals in comparison to SL. Well we can soon discuss about Sri Lanka, the mighty sports nation's exploits in Olympics, by the end of Aug/Sep 2012 and then we can ask your high handedness, which is hard to understand, why is it coming in Cricket section. Since you are also a regular visitor here, reason why I also chose to post, along with others. My impression of South Asian athletics prowess is grim. We might actually qualify for a medal, in producing kids but China is better, even in that department. Its better not to go around boasting, as we are a collective failure & if SL has done wee bit better, then its not worth celebrating, with over the rooftop shouting, Sri Lanka is the best, as your country is equally mediocre. Its got something to do with physical ability or the lack of it, in South Asians..

For a start, geographically, Singapore is far away from South Asia. Culture wise, it is more cosmopolitan and modern. Its governance is simpler in relation to the other bigger countries around. History wise, it is a new nation and is not as rich as the South Asian countries.
