The cervex, or mouth of the womb, will dialate( enlarge) as preperation for the baby to pass thru. It is not unusual for the cervex to be dialted at 1 to 3 cenimeters prior to labor beginning. The cervex will dialte to 10 cenimeters when it is time for the pushing or delivery is ready to begin. I was dialated 2 cm's for 2 weeks prior to all 3 of my children were born. Sometimes it takes a long time once labor begins to go from 2 to 10.That is the hard part of labor. Once you reach the point of pushing, I found that helped the pain. I am guessing this is your first child, so repeat after me....I want an epidural. I had very difficult labors, my first 29 years ago lasted 7 hours, they didnt have epidurals back then, i beged to die and said I would never have another child and I meant it. 12 years later the epidural was in wide spread us and I chanced it because I had a new young husband and wanted to give him a child. I was in labor for 37 hours but by the time the pains got bad, i got an epidural and took a nap while I was in the hardest part of labor, my 3rd child came in only 5 hours and the anesthesiologist didnt get there in time to give me the epidural and once again, i prayed to die, and spent the next 3 days crying. I knew it could have been a beautiful experience and I felt robbed, but my tubes were tied before I ever left the hospital. I knew I would never chance that again. I know every woman you talk to will have a different take on their labor experience and I don't mean to frighten you, just want to let you know that it can be beutiful, The end result is beautiful no matter what, but there is no need to endure that amt of pain if you dont have to. I have had a kidney stone 3 major abdominal surgeries, a concussion, migraines, and various other painful experiences in my life including terible periods and nothing even comes close to bad labor. I wish you well!

the others are right it is you cervix. if you arent sure what that is then the best way to describe it is that it is a tube type of thing in the back of you vag that kind of looks well for lack of a better word like a mans penis and it is really hard and thick normally. as you go along it gets soft and starts to shrink so it can open and stretch so that the baby will fit through. i hope this helps i know that i wish i had some one to tell me the ins and outs

I totally agree with you - but because this is the hip hop section, I think we just look at that in relation to hip hop. If I was a reg on the Rock section, I'd probably be saying the same thing there, but about rock instead of hip hop. You're 100% right in what you say - but it's not that I focus ALL my feelings about that towards hip hop, it's just that when I'm using the RHH section, I'm talking more in terms of what's going on in hip hop than what's going on in society as a whole. I'm just sad that the fact society has become the way it has that it's had an effect on hip hop too (not ALL of it, but some).

they're feeling the cervix to see if the head is positioned right and to see how far the can stick they're hand in before they feel the head to see how far you've dialated.

They are checking to see how much your cervix has opened.. They gage this usually using a fingertip.
