Pattern recognition, so you don't have to reason everything out. 1-2-1 on a straight edge with an open bit everywhere else means the mines are next to the ones. 3's along a straight edge are all mines. There are many others, they're a bit hard to explain without pictures but play a while and you'll learn to recognise them.
When you're going for speed, don't use the question mark. When in doubt, go elsewhere on the board, just leave that spot for a bit, often it'll become obvious when you clear other mines, but putting the question mark there and later changing it takes a lot of valuable time.
When opening the board, click random places until you got a sizable open spot; don't waste time trying to start from a tiny little open area or even a single square with a number. If you crash, no big deal, just start a new game. You don't get points for the percentage of games won or lost.

Look for the lowest number possible. If my first press is a 2 or higher, I move to another location. If its a one or zero, then i go for it. Starting in the corners have the same possibility for a mine than any other square, but the numbers never lie.

When you click on a box, the number inside tells you how many bombs are touching that square (not points, much to my surprise when I found out a few months ago, now I'm addicted to it).
