I keep waking up in cold sweats in the night. Soaking wet from head to toe. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I'm in 40 years old and I'm not even close to the change, so that couldn't be it. It's not too hot at night or anything like that. Any ideas?

Years and years ago, when I was applying for a life insurance separate than the one I had through my work, I was interviewed by a nurse in my home. When she heard that I suffered from nighttime cold sweats sometimes, she called the rest of the interview off, and told me that I was ineligible for coverage. When I asked why, she said that cold sweats can be indicative of pre-existing medical conditions, so they have learned to accept this as one of their screening criteria.

I wanted to find out more, because I was in my late 30's at the time, and healthy, and like you, nowhere near menopause. So I did some checking at the library (this was before the days when home computers were universal) and found out quite a few things....

Nighttime cold sweats can be indicative of a LOT of major conditions or diseases. For example they might indicate sickle cell disease, or an otherwise compromised immune system.

They also can be caused by diabetes, or heart disease, mononucleosis, tuberculosis, AIDS....

I've included some extremely informative links below.

Just as an addendum to the doom...I am now almost 20 years beyond that time I was turned down for life insurance. And although I have successfully gone through the change of life now, I suffer from no other major disease or health issue--no heart disease, no compromised immune system. So I have to wonder if, just sometimes, night sweats are just night sweats with no real cause.

I'm also in my early 40's. And have suffered night sweats for about 10 years. I have been told it could be anxiety related. Or hormonal.
