I read "The Giver" by Lois Lowry in either 7th or 8th grade, and I loved it! I've since re-read it multiple times.

The Outsiders. This is a great movie too. Some schools use this book and movie as part of their reading and/ or language arts classes.

What is he or she interested in reading? Action? Mystery? Fantasy? You can try giving him or her a book that has recently been made a movie, which then is "cool." For example, "Eragon", "Harry Potter", "Bridge to Terabithia", "Stormbreaker", etc. Try going to the local library and ask the librarian for help--they're pretty good at knowing these sorts of things.

ooooh!! i know! when i was in 7th grade, i loved walk two moons and the thief lord. walk two moons is about a girl who is trying to get over her mother's death, but ends up helping herself while telling this remarkable story. it's not to hard to read, and it was inspiring. i loved it and cried everytime i read it. thief lord is more adventorous. it takes place in italy i think, and is about a boy who shelters orphans, steals for them, hence called the thief lord. but there are some secrets to be found about him!! it is capturing. have fun!!
