If the pword is in the bios (that locks the computer when you first turn on), your only chance is open the case, remove the small battery (small like a 5cents), wait a min, then put it back it, it would reset the BIOS.
If the pword is in the Windows itself (account user password), then it's easier. Restart the computer, start tapping the F8 key right after the moment it turned on (don't wait till you see the Windows logo), keep tapping untillyou get to the boot up screen, where you'll see Safe Mode, and other options. Select Safe Mode, then hit Enter, wait till the computer finished loaded the required drivers, then you'll get to the Login windows, you'll see an Administration acccount, use that to log in, then go to Control Panel, Account User, click on that account that has pword, remove the pword, then restart your computer. That account is now have unlocked.

Well, the "unprofessional" buyer is you - maybe you meant the seller?
They were honest - they said password unknown. So you bought a computer for which you don't know the password.
I can suggest two things - try booting in "safe" mode; press either F5 or F8 (it depends on the computer) while the machine is booting BEFORE you see the Windows logo, choose safe mode, and see if you can get into the administrator account. If so, you can change the other stuff.
Otherwise, you'll have to buy a copy of XP and put a new operating system on.
Caveat emptor.

Do you have any operating system disks around that aren't installed on another system? The only thing I can think to do is format the hard drive and do a fresh install of windows. Some systems permit you to do this before you get to the password screen... this depends on the manufacturer and what they will support. If you have a make and model, go to that manufacturer's website and look for a detailed manual, which might have a system-restore or system-rebuild or drive-formating guide to get you back to a fresh install of the operating system.
Did the seller send you any disks with the laptop? Sometimes those have all that you need.

Reboot the machine and enter safe mode by pressing and holding F8 on bootup. When Windows XP gets to the point where it has the username you should see an Administrator account. Click on that to log on. Then set up another user by going to Control Panel, User Accounts, Create and Account. You also would want to delete the previous account. That was a stupid move on the sellers part, I would always recommend using the system restore disk and re-installing windows.

Reboot with F8, pass to risk-free mode. click Administrator account whilst it comes up and need that it doesnt have a password on it, If it doesnt pass into it click on start up > administration panel > person bills > pick the account you pick to alter the PassWord on. and performed.
