I agree. I think it was to make Sasuke think his brother would be an opponent. Well, Itachi was connected with Sasuke more than his mother or father so he loved his brother the most. That could be an idea.
Good Question!!
:)

Well, I guess, instead of testing his strength, he also wants Sasuke to become so much stronger and a better fighter by hating his own brother with a desire for veangence for killing the whole clan...

But, I don't know bout this, but I heard a rumors that Itachi isn't the one who killed Uchiha clan! It was someone else but he (Itachi) or maybe the person used the 'illusion technic' to make Sasuke think that Itachi killed them all but still for the same reason -> So that Sasuke become stronger by hating Itachi himself. By this point of view, Itachi might actually one of the good guys of the story who have something unthinkable-of-others in mine.... *Once again, it's just a rumor - not sure it's for real or not*~

I think Itachi did not kill Sasuke because Itachi believes that the more hate a person have in their heart, the stronger they are. He wanted Sasuke to build enough hate for him to be a worthy opponent. I think deep down inside(this is only my opinion) , Itachi knew that once he joined the Akatsuki organization there was no turning back and he probably was filled with so much guilt over killing his clan and his best friend, that the only way to free himself from guilt and for the Uchiha clan to live on, was to leave a member of the clan alive and die by that person hands as penance(repentance of a sin) for killing the people who were close to him. That person is Sasuke.

As an avid fanfiction reader I know that many fans have many theories. I myself also think there was something more than just 'proving strength'. Such as, Itachi has a mission to protect Naruto and the Uchihas wanted to get rid of the demon so he killed them (he seems the type to take missions seriously don't you think?). Or he had enough of them wanting him to be perfect all the time and escaped the only way he knew how. Or he wanted to protect Sasuke from the same fate. Or maybe he didn't kill them at all but someone else did and in order to infiltrate Akatsuki he made people think he did (through genjutsu?...). I could probably think up a few more but this is enough. what they say in the series just seems way to shallow...

But if he did kill them exactly as in the series, he probably left Sasuke alive to torment him, to maybe have an equal opponent someday or so that maybe Sasuke would kill him someday (guilt? he doesn't want to die of old age or deteriorate so much that a genin could kill him?)

Eh...maybe their parents wanted to kill Sasuke because Itachi was the perfect kid and Sasuke wasn't or something...and then maybe the rest of the family was involved in the plot as well and they told Itachi about it but he didn't want to do it so then he killed all of them to save Sasuke but Sasuke misunderstood about what was happening and therefore thought that Itachi killed all of the family for practice or revenge or some other stupid idea like that

To make a long story short, Itachi wanted to test his strength. Killed the clan except for Sasuke and told him "he wasn't worth killing". Also if he had killed everyone in the clan he would've committed this crime thingy.

Itachi killed all his clan except for sasuke because he said sasuke wasnt worht killing and he killed the clan because he wanted the Mangekyo Sharingan which he could only achieve by killing his best friend and improve by killing all those he cared about

in the story, he killed the clan becuase he wanted to see if he was "capable of pulling it off". i think that becuase orochimaru origionated in the leaf, he might have clues of his intentions of getting the sharingan. if he got rid of the clan, orochimaru would have no choice but to get itachi(unlikely) however, itachi luved sasuke too much to spare him or he didnt want to suffer the guilt of killing the entire clan. then he left the village so orochimaru would not like invade the leaf.
that's a bit too good to be true but i keep hoping heehee

he didnt want to wipe out the entire clan without giving someone a fighting chance to exact revenge. it would be a cowardly thing to do. in this way he doesn't have to sacrifice his honor as a shinobi
