I'm going to join the heater core club. I have lost a couple of them and the steam is one symptom of the failure, another is coolant either in the car of on the ground under the car. If it is under the car it will normally show up in area behind the front wheel on the passenger side of the car.
While generally the other answers are correct in that it can be a costly repair those costs are directly related to how easy or difficult the repair is. Some older vehicles make a heater core replacement a very simple matter but, and again, generally the newer the car the more difficult and hence time consuming the repair becomes. Remember, time is money and shops charge by the hour.
One or two phone calls to local car parts houses will give you an idea of cost for a new core. Keep in mind that a dealer or a mechanics shop will charge more. In some cases a lot more. Be sure to get a couple of estimates on the job. BTW older car's heater cores may be repairable but I would opt for a new one. Usually the repair ends up failing or another part of the core fails in fairly short order.
If you have a local library, check their reference section. See if they have a "Chilton's or a Haynes" service manual for your particular car. If you do any work on your own vehicle, they aren't a bad investment. Read the section on replacing the core and you will get some idea of how difficult it may be. You may find that anyone even fairly familiar with the use of some basic tools can change it saving a lot of money. On the other hand, if it says you have to remove the dashboard, it is a job better left to an experienced mechanic.
Good luck.

It could be a problem with your heater core $$$.
Or maybe just a hose $.
Anyway, you're leaking anti-freeze.
Don't drive til it's fixed.
