I sprained my ankle about a month a go, but it still hurts me. I go to physical therapy twice a week but I’m still worried because I have pom try-outs this week. What can I do to make sure I am ready to dance?

Sprained ankles take a long time to heal because the blood supply to ligaments is very poor. You are doing the right thing by going to PT, but if you are ready to return to competition, consider using an ankle support if you are not 100%. Ask your PT about the trilock by bioskin...it's a breathable fabric and includes a strap that prevents rolling the ankle either inward or outward at both the hind foot and midfoot...gives much more suppport than an aircast or many other standard ankle supports.

See this link: http://ankle-foot.com/orthoplex/bioskin/trilok.htm

Be sure to discuss it with your PT or doctor

A support will help a lot to prevent rolling your ankle again. I wouldn't recommend an aircast. I got a lace up from my podiatrist that is much better than an ace bandage or an aircast. I sprained my ankle and started walking on it too soon and required surgery from constantly turning my ankle and weakening the ligament. Before you go to tryouts talk to your therapist, first to see if you are ready, then see what he recommends and try calling your Dr. as well. You won't necessarily need an apt.

I wouldn't do the dancing because you will probably make the problem worse. But if you must go, get yourself a magnetic necklace and wrap it around your ankle at night when you go to bed and cover it with a big sock. It will reduce the swelling and curve the pain. But remember things will not completey get better until you give up the extensive routine and get back to normal. ok

keep it elevated and ice it...also buy ankle support for your tryouts...either tape them, wear an air brace, or an activ ankle. i personally would go with the activ ankle because it isn't as bulky as an air brace and i feel that they over more protection from rolling your ankle again than tape does
