On an older, carbureted, NON-electronically controlled engine management system, rear wheel drive vehicle, NO, it's not that hard. On a modern vehicle, such as the one you inquire about, YES. You would have to change over a lot of parts, which include: pedal and bracketry, PCM, some wiring harness, the transaxle itself, the shifter mechanism, engine & transmission mounts, axle shafts (automatic and manual are different lengths on GM products), maybe even some of the exhaust system (depending on model). By the time all is said and done, it probably would be far less expensive just to buy a 1997 Cavalier Z24 equipped with a manual, since those cars depreciate quickly.

Depends on who does it and how much you want to spend on this venture. You could put a jet engine into your Z24 if you want.

I did this once (with another car) when I was a kid, decided that I would not do it again.

If the mounts match up then all you have to do is your pedals, shifter, shift linkage, pilot bearing, flywheel, neutral safety switch, reverse lights. I think that's about it.

Good Luck

it is not bout hard, but the parts.. you sure gonna change the gear box, put a pedal (manual brake pedal and auto's are diff) seting up the clutch hydraulic pump assembly, a gear lever, wiring up your computer box..(if apply) well.. if you got all the stuff/parts the work is sure is a piece of cheese cake,.
