He has the "boxer" break in his left hand... ER put on a temporary cast until he can be seen by a specialist. Is there ANY way other than ice/elevation/pain pills to help ease the pain??? He's a tough guy and is seriously struggling, and I feel so bad for him.

Some boxer fractures need surgery, elevation above the heart, ice and some pain medication is about all you can do at this point, make sure to check the temp cast and make sure it is not too tight from the swelling.

Take him back to the Doc, and see if they can assist with his pain. A "Boxer" type fracture {down around the base of his thumb, right?} is a fracture of concern....I'm sure that'.s why he is going to see an Ortho specialist. Be especially concerned if his injured hand is cold, or pale-blue-ish at the fingernails, or if he is unable to "move or wiggle his fingers". Good luck, hope he heals as fast and as well as possible.

The intense pain should die down soon but they should
have given him some Vicoden or Hydrocodone/Codeine pills
to cover him for a few days...

It would be better for him to use a sling, and the only thing that you can do is to decorate his cast :) and spoil him a lot!!!! so he can forget that has a cast :) lots of love does the work :)

best wishes
