They didn't. 911 was an inside job.

Research the issue and then use common sense. Watch the documentary's called "Loose Change" and "In Plane Site"

Destroying any alliance of business that the free world enjoys. Also, a sheer show of force on that entity to use as threats to others who would consider joining against al qaeda.
They were able to show how they can infiltrate and destroy using the most cheapest ways to be extremely effective. Showing also that they can come and go at will, it would be easier to give in to their demands than make a stand against them. Pure terror tactics for far more evil plans.
If successful again on U.S. territory, they can bring trade and business to a halt, effectively making all U.S. citizens slaves.

They want the US out of the Arabian peninsula. By using Saudis for the attacks they were probably hoping the US public would turn against Saudi Arabia and cause enough problems to cause a diplomatic crisis leading to US troop withdrawal. I doubt they thought that it would lead to a US invasion of Iraq, which incidentally, did get US troops out of Saudi Arabia.

because "al qaeda" is a c.i.a. construction/asset, i'd say the motivation was simple....following orders.

You posted this on an AMERICAN website and don't want a US point of view? Go pray to mecca and strap on your suicide belt and go blow up more of your own kind.
