I cant seem to get a credit card right now, but thought about using Paypal when I saw the number of places online that use it,and I recently bought something off of Ebay but used a personal check instead, even though the seller preffered Paypal .. Ive been on the paypal site, and have an account but not sure as to how secure it really is, especially when you have the option to use your checking account !!!

Be careful,I would get a money order instead if they accept it.They also have those pre paid credit cards at walgreens and rite aide that you can buy. They are almost like a gift card. You just go and they scan it and you put however much money you want on there. You can use them online or any where visa/mastercard (ypu can choose wich one) is accepted. You can either get rid of it when your done or keep it and reload it as needed. It really helps when you are unable to get a credit card, and its much more reliable then giving out checking information!!

I opened a separate checking account just for paypal. I only keep a hundred dollars or so in there so that it won't be a huge loss if somebody breaks into the account.

It takes a few days to set up a paypal account. Paypal sends a few cents to your account once you set it up, and they make you verify the deposit before they approve the account. It has been very convenient and it has seemed safe to me.

I am a little hesitent to send any bank information over the net since there is always a chance that the info could be intercepted, but Paypal reduces the risk.

Good luck!

In paypal's Security center there is a sectionm called Security essentials that has this: Free Tools
Complimentary services to increase your online security.

I use paypal since its faster than check sending, I've also considered safety and think that since its so popular being mentioned in the news and things that paypal is safe enough.
Banks take precautions which is one of the things that I had considered because my parents didn't really trust the internet for financial transactions.

PayPal is a good secure site to pay either by credit card or by check.
When you buy something on eBay and the seller is paid by check though PalPal then the seller doesn't have to pay the PalPal fee. It takes a little longer because your check has to clear.
The way you may have to get started through PayPal to pay by check is to set up your checking. It's been awhile for me. I seem to remember that PayPal charged me $5.00 through my checking acct and then refunded me the $5.00. If you can't figure out how to set it up, you could call PalPal.

I'm a former eBay employee (eBay inc. owns PapPal). I know it's pretty scary to put your checking account online, but PayPal does as good a job as any finincial company at protect your personal information online. Here's the details from the PayPal site:

If you're like my Mom whose a big eBay use but still uncomfortable putting her primary checking account information online, you could consider going to your bank and setting up a separate checking account just for PayPal. That's what my mom did.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER EVER giving out checking account to others!!! Only deal with credit cards. Debit card is as bad as checking account. Only credit cards can protect you from something happens. Since credit card is NOT your money, the credit card issuer can step in and help you to get your money back. By rules, which is regulated by the government, credit cards issuer have upto 60 days to put the charge back into your account. This protection doesn't apply to your Debit Card or personal checking account, since they are withdrawn directly from your account.

If something happened and you paid with your check or debit card, your bank doesn't have to help you or get the money back to you. They don't have to do that. It is your responsibility. Even if your bank willing to help you, it would take months to help you.
