Dryads are female tree spirits in Greek mythology. "Drys" in Greek means "oak;" thus, a dryad is specifically a female tree spirit of an oak tree. Some dryads became an integral part of the tree and if the tree died, so did they. This type of dryad was known as a "Hamadryad."

The term sprite is a broad term referring to a number of supernatural legendary creatures. The term is generally used in reference to elf-like creatures, including fairies, dwarves, and the likes of it; but can also signify various spiritual beings, including ghosts.

The term "fairy" is often applied to supernatural creatures, who may or may not be of humanoid appearance, in many cultures. In Western European folklore, the fairy were described as etheral humanoids that enjoyed enchanting humans, casting illusions to alter emotions and perceptions so as to make themselves at times alluring, frightening, or invisible. Eating food from "Fairyland" or accepting a gift from a fairy was often seen as very dangerous in many cultures.

Since the definition of fairies includes a large number of supernatural creatures, the dryad and sprite could be considered as euphemistic names.
