Here's an example. If I asked you, do you think I should wear the blue shirt or the white shirt, and you said "whatever floats your boat" it would mean that you are suggesting I choose whatever makes me happy. So it just basically means 'do whatever pleases you'..

All it means is "Whatever makes you happy", or just "whatever". I say that saying all the time. lol. And no, I don't have a boat.

It means to do whatever feels comfortable or good to you. Since a boat floats smoothly over water, whatever you choose to do will float smoothly also.

I heard it once before, too. It is an idiomatic expression meaning whatever pleases you, or whatever you want/prefer/like, whatever makes you happy.
