theres a few options open to you, first you could buy a usb2.0 pci card, this will plug into a free pci slot and then you can buy a usb mouse that will work through usb
secondly you could ask around in pc shops for a old mouse port adapter, this is a device similar to a modem or any card but at the end you will see a ps2 connector, this will either go into a spare pci slot or intop a specific slot on your motherboard
however by the sound of it the p,c is very old,you will probally find it very slow to use and the memory will probally only be expandable to around 64mb which will only be enough for windows 95/98
but if your like me,you will probally want to tinker around with it and see if you can get as much out of it as you can
good luck anyway

Believe it or not, there was a time when USB wasn't available and we all did just fine without it.

There are a number of options for a mouse on an older machine, a ps2 type, small round plug on the end (most usb mouses come with an adapter for this) a serial mouse, a large square plug, looks a lot like a smaller version of a parallel printer plug and the really old AT type plug, very large round thing that's near impossible to find these days.

The simplest thing for you to do is to just add in a USB pci card. The older machines had lots of empty slots, so you shouldn't have a problem.

It could have a serial port ( one with nine pins)
or a ps2 port ( round with 6 pins and a small prong)

You can get an adaptor to change one to the other

you can purchase a serial mouse....but a cheaper alternative would be to get an adapter usb-serial .....so you can attach your usb mouse to the serial port with just that little connector.

Something that old isn't even worth investing that much time or effort in. Get a new computer.
