Rats don't bother me although I do prefer the white ones that my son had as pets when he was young. Spiders are my thing. I will absolutely hurt myself trying to get away from a spider. It's silly and I know it but ewww. They make me run for the hills. Only thing I have nightmares about also.

To each his own really, but personally I don't like even the pet ones because they remind me of the wild ones which I have had horrible experience with. Wild rats have been known to eat babies fingers and toes. They are particularly aggressive and can attack. They have a long history of carrying disease.
Phobias are usually rooted in bad experiences both real and imagined. They are difficult to overcome. Respect the fact that the pets you love, rats, mice, snakes, tarantulas or whatever, may scare the beegeebers out of someone else!

Well, rats do not have such a good track record throughout history....so yeah, most people are gonna go a bit nuts when they see one. As for me, I am not scared of them, but I don't think I'd want one for a pet. (Field mice are cute, though.) My grandmother has had a problem with them in the past...they like to get into the grain for her chickens. I have talked her into using "catch and release" traps now, though. I hate to see anything being hurt. :0)

When people think of rats, they think of the greasy, filthy ones that hide in the gutters of NYC all day, and then come out at night and bite people. Then the people get diseases such as rabies. Rats have not had such a good rep. throughout history **hint hint** THE PLAGUE **hint hint**

Not pet rats. Wild rats. I can handle mice, but rats .... give me the creeps! (Yes, and maybe I would get up on a table! LOL.)

fortunately I have lived in areas that didn't have big rats...only lots of field mice....we'd get them in traps once in a while...they were more a nuisance (i.e. they'd chew into containers to get holiday treats or nest in car upholstry)
