Chuck Berry is one of rock & roll's great lyricists and developed some of its earliest trademark guitar licks. He had a rhythm and beat that was different than anyone else. On stage he fascinated People with his guitar playing and dancing. Especially his version of the duck walk.

First and foremost, his lyrics were simple and struck a chord (no pun intended) with youth of all colors and classes, and they still deal with issues that many teens can identify with. Hank Williams is similar, in that his music and lyrics are simple, but they deal with issues that everybody could, and still can, relate to. Muddy Waters, his contemporary and label mate at Chess was far more popular with blues fans, but his lyrics were more adult and black oriented.

His music also had a way of appearing innocent, a little tongue-in-cheek, but full of double entendre if you were into the lingo, which most teens were and most adults weren't. It was like a dirty joke you could tell in front of your parents without them knowing.

Besides, he's a good (not great, but really good) guitar player, excellent entertainer, and writer of fun, easy to love lyrics. He's not afraid to have fun, even at his own expense.
