Nice idea, if the day ever comes when slavery ends; but not much point really, because the probability is it will never end. You see, I have this pessimistic theory about slavery which goes something like this:
Since the time when mankind first arrived on this Earth, people have been made slaves in some form or the other and in varying degrees of severity. This propensity has continued up to the present day and shows no signs of abating. No single nation,or race is, historically, any better or worse than anyone else in this matter. As human nature will probably never change then slavery, which is a consequence of human nature, will always be with us, (just like the poor).
This is a very pessimistic prophesy I do agree, but a wholly realistic one you must also agree; however, I do applaud all the optimists in this world who believe otherwise. I hope they prove my theory wrong.

I don't know that I can give that an honest answer and here are my reasons:

1- slavery is still among us.
2 - I feel that the word "prejudice"is being thrown around way to often even when it does not apply and the more this subject is pushed, the more conflict we will have.
3 - I am very glad that the African slaves who were forced to come to America in our History were freed and feel compassion for those that lived the trauma, however do not feel that I, personally (or any person alive today) owe any apologies in the present day because of it. Our apologies would not be given to the right people.

So, i guess I am undecided over this subject.

legal slavery ended on this planet in 1962 when Saudi Arabia abolished it.

As for white slavery it is illegal. Sweatshop labor is paid labor, poorly paid, but not slavery.

I don't think the Americans should commemorate the end of American slavery. They are so ill-informed and confused over the short history of the United States that it would only create more misunderstanding.

Yes. Contact me again, once slavery has ended and I'll help plan the commemoration.

However, I do think we should commemorate those individuals who have tried to end slavery.

It would be nice if we could "Commemorate" but there are over 13 Million slaves in the world today.

I think we do, on every election day, when blacks and whites join together to elect our officials. That's more symbolic and celebratory than any special "day".

And, I think places like the National Park at Gettysburg, and other battlefields, do that as well. And we have hundreds, if not thousands, of statues across the US commemorating it.

I'm just referring to the US... there are still other places that it exists, unfortunately.

I think we should, however also make it a day where we think about the modern day slaves, as slavery has not been abolished completely.
For example, human trafficing is a type of slavery.

We could do with another William Wilberforce for that...

Nope, the statue replaced into initially think to be on the top of the Suez Canal in Egypt as a fashionable version of the Colossus of Rhodes. whilst it replaced into rejected he then sent it to america to rejoice the Centennial.
