Amorphous, from the Greek roots meaning "without form." A crystalline solid has atoms or molecules arranged in a regular (repeating) pattern. The simplest form of a crystalline solid is cubic, and the most common example of a cubic solid is table salt. (Look at some salt crystals under a microscope.) Any book on minerals will explain the different crystalline forms.

A solid with atoms or molecules that follow no particular form is amorphous. A common example is glass.
