This is a pretty absurd question. How do you think players are able to play without a coach?! If that were the case you'd have some of the most selfish games taking place with no chemistry, no structure, no discipline. Players would be arguing left and right with teammates and the games would not be enjoyable for players, officials, and spectators. The coach scouts the opponent, sets the offensive and defensive strategies, and manages the flow of the game. Now coaches in the NBA is another question in and of itself...why do you think the NBA game is so selfish and boring to watch?

A coach is there to moderate for most of the game. If he sees a trend in the playing of the team he will make adjustments accordingly. You can't trust players to govern themselves or else there would only be 6 or 7 man rosters. No one would want to leave the court unless extremely tired or hurt.
Game time is no time to have a democracy. You need 1 person, not 5, making decisions about scheme and strategy. What I think about a man-to-man defense doesn't mean that the 4 other guys agree.
Without a coach it would be the AND1 tour.

and what happens if you have a team say like
kobe bryant, scottie pippen, allen iverson, can't think of two other really bad one, but nonetheless, these guys are the kinds that want to play the whole game. i remember pippen was so ticked off when he wasn't part of the scheme in a playoff game. he was so pi$$ed that he sat out that possession. guess what? kukoc made the winning shot! that's what makes the team work in certain situations. yeah, you might be able to have a player/coach, but there's the word, coach.
it is a coach who is able to see what is happening from the sideline as opposed to players who are merely focusing on their assigned opponent as opposed to watching the entire team as a unit
i think coaches are needed, good ones, though, are hard to find

no, i think that coaches are there to make up plays. you can't just play basketball without having a plan first. you'll lose that way. some people that can play basketball very well but can't write a play to save them lives
