There are different ways of answering this – depending on what your definition of country is, and whether you count countries that end with the word “Island.” I’ll use the list of “sovereign states” from Wikipedia. Even this list can be disputed because of the status of some countries are in dispute. Further, the list of “countries” (though not necessarily sovereign) includes more (such as Greenland). Of course, this list is based solely on the English names of countries. For example, Dutch for Nederlands is Nederland.

Here are the undisputed 9:

Finland
Iceland
Ireland
New Zealand
Poland
Somaliland
Swaziland
Switzerland
Thailand

Now the question is, do we include the United Kingdom because its full name is “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”
However, if we use full names, we must now exclude Switzerland since it is the Swiss Confederation.

Noting answers above (including the infoplease list), some include non-countries (such as England and Scotland which are part of the UK, and Greenland which is not independent of Denmark).

Ascension Island, Christmas Island, Aland, Cayman Islands (does that count?!), Finland, Greenland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Poland, Somaliland, Swaziland, Switzerland, Thailand. So 13 (not inc islands plural!)

Goodness knows. I am not going to the web to get a list of all the countries in the world and spend the next three hours or so counting them. You can if you want to.

Doesn't it depend which language you are speaking?

Two examples:

England is Angleterre in French

But Switzerland is either la Suisse, die Schweiz or Svizzera in its own country's languages.
