OK, so I've joined an intramural team at my university. It's division B, so it's a little less competitive. I've been skating for a month now and I've gotten pretty good at it. I've also been going to open hockey, but I haven't been too fierce. I'm very jittery, our first game is on Monday and I am to be a wing at said game. Ahh! I have never played an actual game of hockey.

Any suggestions to improve myself or get rid of the nerves?

Buddy, hockey is all about fun. Say hi to the boys before the game, get it going ya know, tell some jokes, have a good time. All you can do is try your best int he spirit of the game, and have a good time. If you screw up out there, don't take it to heart, it's yoru first game for Christ sakes, just shake it off and learn. Div B. wont' be too competitive anyways.
After the game have a few Molsons with the boys and chill, that's what hockey's all about.

What University you go to anyways?

My best advice to go go and warm up the way you always do, run the same drills you do before practice... and then, before the teams head to the benches, have one of your best buds check you into the boards (something simple, like a sholder-to-shoulder hit.. and not too vicious) and then YOU check HIM into the boards.

Whether it's a contact league or not, the contact and the sound of hitting the glass will get your adrenaline settled and tell your body "I'm going to be fine".

At least, that's what I do/did.

Just go out and have fun. Like you said, less competitive. You take that type of hockey too serious, you are only going to end up frustrated.

Don't sweat it. After your first shift the nerves go away and you'll be good to go.
