We are about to live together, but my cat, who I rescued from a dust bin at 6 days old, can't come with me. He is 2 years old now, how can I leave him behind?

Do not leave him. You are responsible fore your cat - he depends on you and loves you. Do not abandon him.

When you get a pet you make a commitment to that animal to give it a home and a stable loving environment for the rest of it's life. I wouldn't move in with someone who said my pet wasn't welcome. Your cat is attached to you and loves you, he will be confused if you leave him behind at this point. If you do foolishly move in with the person who says you can't have your cat, at least find your cat a very good home and hopefully he will adapt.

If he loves you then he would understand that your cat is a part of your life. If your the one looking after the cat then he is your responsibility, all your guy has to do is tolerate him.

Don't lose your cat just because of someone who doesn't understand that relationship.
Just imagine how you would feel if your relationship doesn't work out and you had given your cat away for him.
