You'll be fine, I promise ....

You'll be asked take off your trousers/skirt and underwear and lie on your back on a couch (you can do this in your own time). You have to lie with your knees drawn up and spread apart (you'll usually be asked to put your ankles together so your knees will fall apart) . If this position is difficult for you to get into, you can ask your nurse to take the smear when you are lying on your side with your knees drawn up.

It can be a little uncomfortable because of the position you have to get into but it shouldn't hurt. (it can be more uncomfortable if you are very tense so try your best to relax)

Once your comfortable (or as comfortable as you can be) the doctor/nurse puts an instrument called a speculum inside your vagina (it's an instrument that has 2 arms that spread the sides of your vagina apart so that the doctor/nurse can see your cervix clearly). Then the surface of your cervix (neck of your womb) is scraped with a spatula/ brush. This collects a sample of skin cells from your cervix.

As soon as the nurse gets your sample she will spread them onto a glass slide and they will be sent off to the lab for testing... the test will be over and you'll be able to get dressed, there really is nothing to worry about :)

Oh and just a note... don't listen to Dr "i'm a GP" Frank...(if he is a GP i'm the tooth fairy) what he explained is a vaginal examination and will only ever take place if the doctor or nurse doing your exam thinks that they need to check that your womb is the normal size and in the right possition (and even then there will be no "side to side to check tubes"<<< how low down does he think your bloody tubes are!! lol), they will just put 2 fingers inside of you and push gently on your abdomen to feel the womb and that is all.... the chances of this happening is extreamly slight... nothing for you to worry about whatsoever!

Just relax, concentrate on nice things, breathe deeply and it'll be over in a flash :)

hope this helps

Well, it's a little uncomfortable, and undignified but it really doesn't hurt, so don't be frightened. The doctor (or nurse) will ask you to remove your lower clothing, and you will be able to do this in private. Then you will lie on the bed with your knees bent, ankles together so your legs are splayed. They insert a speculum with some gel on it, and this is probably the weirdest bit as it feels a bit uncomfortable, but try to relax and it's really not that bad. The speculum opens you up (although you really don't tend to feel that bit) and they take a cell sample from your cervix which is, again, a little uncomfortable, but it's quick. They'll then leave you alone to get dressed, and the results generally take a couple of weeks. I usually feel a little crampy for an hour or so, but if you take a paracetamol before you go, this helps. Good luck - it's not that bad - really - and hell, it's better than cervical cancer!

Assuming it is done slowly by a caring professional it will be no more than uncomfortable. The examiner will insert 2 lubricated, gloved fingers and may at the same time press on you lower abdomen. They will check your cervix and womb and then more out from side to side to check your tubes and ovaries.
