when i was growing up in the 1940s it was always a big day in Ireland on the 17th march, and we did not have TVs then Deirdre.

today officially (march 17th, same every year)
however as today is a Saturday they are having a bank holiday on Monday, you know like if Christmas day falls on a weekend.

I've heard that it's either the 16th or the 17th. In any case, it wasn't celebrated as it is now until the 1960's, when they got television and saw how it was celebrated in the United States. Not wanting to be outdone in the celebration of one of their own saints, they began to celebrate in earnest.
