But, the answer should not have anything to do with popularity or team success. I don't care about the hotdogs who play for the cameras or talk about themselves. I want to know who was the best at rushing, receiving, blocking, leadership and class.

First My List (pick on "source")

Sweetness Walter Payton was incredible. I was lucky enough to catch the end of his career when I was growing up. Sweetness did not believe in using the sideline. He was great!!!

Jim Brown. Many will mention him but I think he retired to early. He was a bruiser and can do things no other back could do (probably still to do this day).

Barry Sanders - He had to make 3 guys miss before getting to line of scrimage. He was on a horrid team that refused to build around him. He would make the best defenders look silly when he juked them out of their socks. JUST THROW THE BALL TO THE REF.

Emmit Smith - As a Giants' fan I am biased. Emmit was durable and strong willed. He also played behind a GREAT front line and had a great team. He could change a game by himself... (That hurt me to say).

Ladanian Tomlinson - I may be a lttle premature but today we are witnessing 1 of the best RBs in history. He can run, catch and even throw. The guy is really amazing and I consider myself lucky to watch him play while unserstanding what I am actually seing.

Jim Brown was the best ever. He only played in a 12 game season too. Walter Payton was not quite as good as Jim Brown, but almost. Barry Sanders was, Id say, almost as good as Walter Payton. You have to put LaDainian Tomlinson in the top 5. He will be the best ever when he retires, nobody can deny that.

But Jim Brown had an average of 5.2 yards per rush, which is unbelievable. If you give him the ball twice you have a first down, and thats just saying if he doesnt break off a huge TD run. Most people will say that its Walter Payton or Barry Sanders, because more of the people here actually got the chance to watch them play. Jim Brown on the other hand, played in the 50s and 60s, so not many people on Answers can recall him playing. Jim Brown is not only the best running back ever, but the best football player of all time.

Most say its too early, but LaDanian Tomlinson is simply the best. He had 100 receptions in one year, as a rb. He has never had less than 1200 yards. He has scored 111 touchdowns in 6 years, plus thrown for another 6. Some say he needs more on his resume, but what more can he do? He is simply the greatest running back of all time, and if he continues to play at this rate, my one day be considered the greatest player ever, surpassing even Jerry Rice.

Jim Brown. There have been some that of passed him because Jim Brown did not have the 16 game schedule that they have today. JimBrown had the best combination of power and speed. If Jim Brown had the 16 game regular season schedule when he played instead of the 12 or 14 game schedule and would have played a couple more years he possibly could have set some records that may have never been broken. I don't think anybody has a 5.2 yards per carry average like he does.

You will get a lot of Jim Brown answers because somewhere along the way the press has built him up to be the best. He couldn't block anybody, had a short career and played during the time when his only competition at RB was Jim Taylor. He couldn't carry Walter Peyton's jock strap.

I love all the other guys, i mean they are legends and were all amazing, BUT LT is the best back to ever step foot on a football field. No one has ever been this strong at all the aspects of the position. Everyone says it is premature to say so but i disagree we are asking the best back ever, LT is in his prime and outperforming any person to ever think about running the football. He is one of the best blockers, receivers, outside runners, inside runners, break away speed, leadership, morality, and look at that stiff arm it hurts to watch it sometimes. We watch the greatest every week of the season. Quit listening to old guys complaining about he hasn't done enough yet and its different today than it was then. Right now Lt has moe talent than anyone has ever had.

You only have to watch the NFL network currently running on all cable systems and direct tv to know that Sweetness was the best ever. However if it is for pure running talent and if he had played another 3-5 years then my pick would be Barry Sanders. He was the best pure talent ever to carry the pigskin , he ran both vertical and straight ahead with cut backs that shook many a would be tackler out of his jockstrap.

Jim Brown or Walter Payton easy, But QBNathan could have been right if Bo Jackson doesn't have to leave the game. I thought he was awsome, and I hate the Raiders, But Bo Jackson had (IT), everytime he carried the ball it look like a T.D. He seemed so fast, like everybody else was playing in sand. To bad we will never know how good he would have been.

1. Jim Brown: U knew he was coming and u could not stop him.
2. Walter Payton: A great back on a history making team.
3. Barry Sanders: He is great because he did not have the best blockers and still was great.
