I have a 91 cutlass supreme automatic center council shifter it slips out of gear when you come to a stop. it does not do it all the time. if you shift to neutral and back to drive it goes into gear again the transmission shifts perfectly what is causing this.

Transmission detent, and shifter aren't matched.

It's a simple adjustment at the linkage to the transmission if you know how to do it, and have car ramps. It needs to be done from undernieth.

Or pay a shop to do it.

could be that the bushing in the shifter is worn. they are plastic. to check pull off the boot cover and see if your shifter has any sloppy movement. other wise the shift linkage is out of adjustment.

check your engine and transmission mounts. It sounds like a forward mount is worn or broken allowing the engine to roll forward when stopping. You can also try adjusting the cable on the transmission where it mounts.

try going from 2nd into drive and see if it stays then.if it goes out then,then it must be inside the tranny.
