Do you think that the gov't should encourage people to shower and bathe less or to use cold water or washing. It's been shown that hot water consumption is a major energy drain. Couldn't people just "wash up" instead? In the old days people never bathed as much as they do now, yet they were OK.

Actually, in the days that people didn't bathe that often, they died a lot earlier in life.
Not all was attributed to the filth, but is was a cause

There is some awareness, there are low flow shower heads now and toilets that use less water. I've lived through water shortages and in the 60s in California, there was actually a class in school that showed how much energy you saved by washing in cold water and not leaving the water running while you brushed your teeth, etc.

I think some encouragement would be great. I only occasionally use warm water for laundry, almost always use cold, take shorter showers, don't run the dishwasher unless I've had company and it is a full load. Little things like that add up, and if everyone was doing it, it could make a difference.

The trick is to get folks to care, and realize that all the resources we take for granted are not without cost, and have a limit. Unfortunately, in America, that seems to label you a tree-hugging liberal.

Maybe a campaign to value our resources would work, I'm all for it.

Hey Lance, I have to agree with you. After living overseas for three years, I realized how obsessive the U.S. is about bathing. It's more a cultural issue not a governmental one.
Until the consciousness of our culture is raised to think of ourselves as part of a whole, rather than me myself and I, the idea of using and consuming less is just a dream. We are the epitome of conspicuous consumption, and to make it worse many are proud of this. Don't get me wrong I bathe everyday. But 3 out of 7 days are nothing more than a sponge bath in a partially filled bathtub.
