Holidays used to be Holy Days; thats where the word came from. There used to be a lot more religion and praise in the western world and these holy days are a hold-over from back then. We remember (well, I don't) the birth of Christ, the crucifixion at Easter. We celebrate the end of the Great War (WW1) with Armistice day on 11/11 (US = Veterans day).
Hallmark cards more or less invented Mothers Day and (Saint) Valentines day for commercial purposes. The Irish more or less invented (saint) Patricks day which used to be confined to Ireland, Boston, Chicago and NYC.
Most countries remember their independence from some empire or other such as July 4th in the US.
I am pushing 59 and can remember the old times when Mothers day was a new concept, StPatricks was just for the Irish and nobody sent Valentines cards.
Do you really want to work all year long?

Mostly it's a good way to get out and meet the community and also it breaks up the months of winter when things get kind of boring. People need fun reasons to send cards and keep in touch. Every now and then we need a reason to get together and relax. If it weren't for Holidays I probebly wouldn't see half my family! lol

Because work is out of our minds, and it's time for us to be with our families, relatives & buddies. So cherish it. Don't be depressed about it.
