It drives perfectly but the idle speed is low, it also'hunts' when left to idle. The revs go from nect to nothing up to 1000 ish. It cuts out too.

Idle speed is controlled by the ECU and is non adjustable, more likely the fault is in the idle air control valve, ( usually just needs a clean).

You prove it if you have air-con fitted - with the engine at normal operating temperature, switch on the air-con - the idle should compensate for the extra load.

The short answer is i dunno!
However, you should look at the carburretor. Some have an Idle screw or knob which you can turn to alter the idle speed.
This was how it was done in the good old days when mechanics actually fixed things rather than the swapping new for old replacing parts which happens nowadays.

you cant alter the idle speed, sounds like you have an air leak, could be as simple as a perished or worn through vac pipe

take it to ford they will plug and play this could be an ecu (brain) fault
ford only sorry
