The committee actually only selects 34 teams, the other 31 gain automatic entry by winning their conference tournament. A few years ago, there were only 30 conferences in NCAA division I basketball, but when a 31st conference was added, the NCAA decided it would be unfair to have less 34 "at-large" bids, so they created a "play-in" game, now being called the "opening round" game, which faces off, usually what is determined to be the 64th and 65th best teams in the field, with the winner entering the NCAA tournament as a #16 seed.

osumouse got it on the money!! there was a field of 64 comprised of the teams that had automatic bids, followed by the at large bids. when a new conference was added, this would have left a team out in the cold. now there is a play-in game to figure which 16 seed will be crushed by the number one seed. i just don't know if it is a rotating #1 seed per year or if it is always against a specific #1 seed in a particular region.

well 31 auto bids and 34 at large. 2 of the teams play the play-in game vs. a #1 seed. for example, this year Niagra defeated Florida A&M for the right to play kansas in the NCAA tournament

They used to just pick 64 teams but others thought they were being left out unfairly. They decided to pick 63 teams that are definitely in and have two other patsies play to get the 64th spot. That team will play the all around number one seed. The tournament committee ranks all team 1 through 64. The top four teams are the number one seeds. The next four are the number two seeds, etc. The 64th team, plays the number one seed. 63rd plays 2nd, etc.

Teams # 64 and 65 play off to see who actually goes on. This year it was Florida A & M vs. Niagra. Niagra won and played KU last night. They did not fare well against the Jayhawks.

whilst the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences chop up (after the two year probationary era), the MWC became granted the thirty first motor vehicle bid. extremely than shrink the style of at-large bids to 33 like the ladies did, the adult men only stored the at-large pool at 34 and threw communities sixty 4 and sixty 5 interior the play-in. form of a dumb concept, yet they are going to get stomped via the a million-seed besides...i'm extremely impartial in direction of the belief because it rather basically concerns to the communities enjoying in it.
