At this time laws exist (or better, precedent exists) for a person to sue another over money owed to their parent or other ancestor...there is no limiting factor such as it being 200 years ago...but there must be real proof that a wrong happened and that the parties involved today are descendants of the original people and that the person living today has a direct benefit from the ancestor's labor that was not paid for...such as a wealthy man who's family was slave holders and amassed wealth that continues to accumulate...I think that the descendant should certainly lay claim to a the portion his ancestor contributed....however, for instance, my family never owned slaves and actually had men who fought for the idea of freedom for all men, even though they really probably did not care specifically for the black, but for freedom in general since they were German and Irish farmers who moved to America just before the war and were certainly idealistic....and many other people's families are similar to mine, there should never be a burden on those that never held slaves...it just isn't right....My ancestors lived and survived at times by luck and hard work...they weren't rich and actually probably just wanted everyone to have a fair shake in life, because they often didn't get one either.

Why is it that no black leader in recent times has stood up and recognized white men in the 1860's who left their children and wives and fought for a mysterious black man (they probably had seen very very few if any and still took up their rifles and walked to the war hundreds of miles away). I have absolutely nothing against any black man...but he needs to understand that we all live for our children and any extra effort for a stranger is pretty darned special...even today....

there is a story of a government man in the south asking a man with 20 or so slaves to dig out the muck at a bridge so they could rebuild the foundation. the slave holder refused saying that he would not want to damage his "property" since certainly several would likey die in doing so...he said to the government man "Go get some Irishmen"...they'll do it for next to nothing because they have nothing else...so it wasn't only blacks that suffered in some way....the Irishmen that lived certainly prospered, but the dead Irishmen are simply dead and have no descendents.

I agree 100% with you. Worse yet, American citizens and organizations are adopting African children with Aids and bringing them over hear, raising money (American Idol, Sprint etc...) for them that could be used over here. Then they want to put people in power right here in the United States that are ancestors from there.
By the way, they're getting their full apology right now in the ways of winning at the Grammy's every year, having the whole country be-boping to their music and every Black male humping on a White bitzz.

My question would be why a small group has so much power over the politician. African American are only 12%-16% of this country, but they get most of the government handouts and special treatments.

this is a great debate topic.... I have a lot of educated black friends and they are mystified as well .... this close to election time it seems to be very self serving and rather pointless to the rest of us....

I would love to hear what Bill Cosby has to say.... he would probably answer by asking his fellow Blacks who are asking for the apology ...why so many of the young male blacks are High School drop outs ...why so many families have no father at home ... and why are so many young Black women single parents ....and ask all the above to apologize for that...

It`s happening here in the UK too, when the African Americans,or in our case, the African British apologize for all the gun crime on our streets then maybe just maybe,we will start to show them some respect.

I think that bill was paid in full and in blood already at places like Gettysburg, Shiloh, Antietam, and thousand of over places.
Apologize for what.

Thousands of dollars is chump change in the grand scheme of things. I guess they want to show the African-American community that they do care about them. I say if they want to apologize, so be it. I don't care one way or the other.

reparations have been tossed about for years.

every so many years it comes up again.

if anyone who was a slave prior to the end of the civil war and is still alive today -- it's going to be difficul to compensate a dead person.

i agree....African Americans are much better off here than in AIDS and famine ridden Africa....i don't see Jewish people using the Holocaust against anyone...and there were 6 million Jewish people that were tortured and killed...in my opinion a MUCH bigger ordeal than slavery.
