I want to stay in Benaulim, but have been told that most of it shuts down and the beach shacks dissapear. Is this true? I thought once the monsoon had started, it cooled down just a little bit (Mid June onwards)....Would you advise visiting at this time? I would also like to stay in Palolem...are there places still open? Is the heat really that unbearable?

It is the monsoon there then. you should head up to Dharamsala or Manali (himichal pradesh) at that time of year. i was there June/July last year and the weather was great, really warm during the day and would cool down overnight.
A lot of long term travellers spend the winter down around Goa and then about now head up to the mountains.

We just returned from Benaulim a few days ago, already one or two of hte beach shacks have shut down. One of the waiters we got talking to at Rogers (one of the shacks) told us he was heading home to Mumbai in a few weeks, he says some of the places stay open, but only like one or two. In terms of weather, I can't help you with June/July, all I can say is early/mid March was fairly humid, but bearable.

well Andy as this is the main monsoon time you will not find many if any beach shacks open. all though it is monsoon time it does.nt rain persistently the sun comes out, so the humidity will be pretty high, everything stays damp, mossies galore. but there is still a god time to be had. i like it out of tourist season. places to stay are cheaper, prices in general are much cheaper, as for palolem, well this is a quiet place even in the tourist season. your best bet is to head to the north of Goa,, eg; baga or candolem
