I know that they put liners down in some, but like on the sides where it runs higher because it may have rained or something.

the natural resistance of the soil to water flow and the water pressure in the soil.

different soils have different resistance rates. the soil around a man-made pond is highly compacted, usually impervious clays, to increase this resistance.

the pond would drain quickly if there were no water in the surrounding soil but as the pond fills with water the surrounding ground also saturates with water and the water level stabilizes. we use a term called water table to describe the point where the soil reaches this saturation point.

often if a pond is leaking they add bentonite, a fine grained clay that expands in water, to the water and/or soil to seal the leak.

nothing short of covering the pond really stops the evaporation. this can be the greatest loss of water at times. planting shade trees can help...

The ground absorbs all the water is can handle. Like a sponge, you can only soak up so much water.

Most likely there is some kind of plastic under the pond to prevent it from soaking into the ground.

in man made ponds, they have a certiain kind of dirt that goes on the bottoms, so the water won't seep thru...dont know what kind it is tho
