I worked for a national cable company for over 17yrs before retiring and the modems we had hooked up in the office were always left on as well as my own modem at the house. We never had a problem due to the modem being left on. HOWEVER the advice about a good firewall being installed and operating can not be stressed too much. If your computer and other equipment is on and running they could be compromised by hackers and viruses. Many of the modems have a setting to disconnect the output while still being connected and up. This will give you an added security measure and the modem is still able to receive any global updates your service provider sends out.

The modem can be left on all the time, but I would suggest turning off your computer if gone for an extended period of time. Cable Modems (If that what you were refering to) are intended by the cable provider to be kept on all the time. They use online information for statistics on outages in certain areas. If your modem has a standby button you could press that as well.

I do. I run a cancer research programme on my pc and it needs to communicate with HQ regularly through the day.
When I am on hols, I prefer to use a USB powered - not mains powered - modem. I generally unplug all electrical items, except for my pc and burglar alarm, whilst I'm away.
My pc is protected by a firewall, so it's as strongly protected whilst I'm away, as when at home. Also got antispyware, etc.
Good luck! Rob

Leaving a modem on constantly shouldn't hurt anything, however check the owners manual for issues concerning maximum operating temperatures.
Side note: if you are using broadband, it's highly advisable to be using a firewall (hardware or software) to protect your computer(s) from intruders

I'd say no. I know that one ISP's T&Cs are that you leave the modem on at all times, but if you ask them nicely they'll let you turn it off. What about power cuts etc?

It shouldn't be using all that much electricity. Don't forget to purchase a hardware firewall/router with network address translation (NAT) so that the script-kiddies can have fun attacking it instead of your computers.
