MySpace? Do you think this could be a sign of favoritism or make other co-workers feel bad?

If they are friends only, there's no problem. If they are more than friends, it first depends on company policy, many companies frown on it, some forbid it. If the company doesn't frown on relationship between co-workers and the two are professional at work then there should not be a problem. When I met my wife I was her supervisor, 15 years later she was my supervisor. If the supervisor does not show any favoritism what is there to feel bad about?

Having previously run a hospital and been a political appointee in another lifetime, my experience is that friendships between these two groups become problematic over time as the relationship often supersedes or interferes with productivity and may be construed by co-workers as unfair practice (favoritism), which in turn can create legal problems during performance reviews or diminish the credibility of both in the eyes of upper management. The supervisee no longer sees the supervisor as his leader, if the supervisor gives him a questionable evaluation, the supervisee becomes upset and personalizes it, etc. Too many situations arise where the relationship interferes!

Far too problematic in most jobs I've seen... sort of like money between friends- many a relationship has been ruined by these well meant gestures.

Hey girly...

Gee, this is tough. I am in the same boat, I think. I love my job, but my boss is always going to lunch with the others...and I work for her...she has never asked me to go to lunch with her and the others....it hurts my feelings. I am left out.

I suppose it is free world...and if those in your work place want to do that, I suppose there is nothing wrong with it....although it will indeed offend others....as if they are not cool enough.

This was hard....I think if I was the Supervisor, I would include everyone to lunch or not at all, same with myspace....or I would keep it to myself.

Hurting/offending others is something I can't stand! I love people and care for anyone/everyone

Absolutely not! It's not fair ... there is obvious favoritism going on there.


Create a new e-mail account with her name on yahoo or something and send it to her work e-mail address all day with random messages. You could include links about being too chummy with people at work, inappropriate behavior at work, etc.; this may straighten out the problem a bit!

If not, it will drive her crazy having e-mails coming in to her from herself! Use the computers at your local library.

Being friends on MySpace shouldn't be a problem, but if they are buddying up at the office or partying with each other afterward, that would be a problem (and every supervisor should know not to do it).

yes supervisor and subordinate can be friends and if someone say that there is favoritism let them say so.why do they have to feel bad if you stay yourself even though your freind with the supervisor i mean you don't ignore your earlier freinds.

It's okay, just remain PROFESSIONAL at work. Don't tell your business so your co-workers won't have anything to feel bad about. You don't want any jealously starting.
