Virual memory is used when regular memory runs out. This is usually caused by TOO MANY Programs running. So if you did not open any windows yet, I would suspect SpyWare. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry

Good luck and Happy Computing!

you do not state what operating system you are using, but as an example, you can in win98 click on MY COMPUTER, and the last tab under PROPERTIES is PERFORMANCE, where you can LOOK at your Virtual Memory ( your harddrive is used as temporary memory ), and choose another drive, or how much harddrive space you want Windows to use as Virtual space. And the answer above states, you are filling up your harddrive and there is no more room for temporary storage... Either change the Virtual Drive settings to another empty drive, or burn your data, and clear up space.

go to control panel then click on system..then go to advanced tab.you should see 3 parts to it.top one says performance, click settings on that..then click advanced tab in there..bottom box will allow you to increase your virtual memory..as for your computor running slow, look in task manager and see if you have things running in there that you might not need..i only have the things running that are needed..to control what starts up go to start then run..type msconfig, end tab says start up, click that and you will see what is starting up at boot..turn off anything not needed as you can always start them manually anyway..this will reduce the amount of virtual memory being used.getting hold of a program called tune up utilities 2007 would be a good thing too.it has a clean up and defrag on it as well as registry cleaner and diskdoctor..it has many more features too that will aid you in making your widows run faster.. i hope this has helped

log on as administrator, click start, control panel, system, then advanced tab.click settings on performace tab.click advanced tab . under virtual memory click change button, make sure system managed size is selected and let xp manage these settings for you.

You could also remove any unwanted programs from your computer using add& remove programs and close any open programs that you are not using .

Your computer doesn't have enough RAM, so it goes to the hard drive to make up the difference. You need to buy more RAM. It's not that expensive, a stick of 512mb should take care of your problem for less than $75.

Perhaps you have too many programs on the hard drive. Get rid of those you never use first and see how things go. If that fails to get the speed up, you might have to upgrade.

You could do with at least 512 mb RAM, Windows XP uses 256 mb by itself!
