I need some advice....I'm in training for a correction officer...it's a 5 week program...I have to do intense workouts twice a week which involves running...I'm getting ready to start my 3rd week and I have developed shin splints....or I believe that's what this is as most of my classmates with more running experience have seen this before...however, I have 2 more workouts this week, back to back...is there anything I can do to aleviate the pain of the running??? it starts out sort of mild and by the time we're finished, i'm in pretty bad pain....If I can't complete these last 2 workouts, I cannot get my certification, so I have to find some way to get through this...ANY information will be greatly appreciated...I'm desparate for help at this point....

Try hot baths or a hot tub the night before.

Also, an hour or so before the run, take ibuprofen or something like Aleve. That may make the pain more bearable.

Stop Shin Splints Forever?

I've been a runner for many years and I know of no quick solution. The only real solution is rest. Shin splints can be greatly reduced if not eliminated altogether under proper training, but, of course, it is too late for that at this point. I've know a couple of people who have taped their shins when they were in dire pain and had a big meet just ahead, but the relief will be very slight, if at all.

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.shinsplintscure.org ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!

Stretch a lot before and after running. Get fit by a professional for the right running shoes, replace the crappy stock insoles with some after market insoles.

Use ice on your shins after the run. Frozen bag of vegetables (peas, corn, ....) work well for this - the bag will form to your shin.

There is no quick fix.

Heating pads after workouts combined with good stretching, lots of water (hydration is huge), and motrin 800mg three times a day will get you through the pinch. If still with pain also take tylenol 1000mg up to 4 times a day. I wouldn't advise this all the time for chronic treatment but in a short pinch like this it will work better then most anything else.
