What group of people, other than those of Jewish descent, were persecuted in the Holocaust? And why?

Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted because of their stand to remain neutral and their refusal to participate in anything related to the Nazi government. Out of the thousands that were persecuted, very few renounced their faith as they were demanded to do by the Nazis. Today, many people and governments recognize the bravery and courage the Witnesses had to remain faithful during the Nazi regime.

Gypsies, homosexuals, people with severe mental disabilities, and often criminals were persecuted for simply being different. Anyone who was a strong contrast to the Aryan stood a chance of being persecuted. Smoke and Ashes by Barbara Roganksy is a good book about the Holocaust and it includes some information about who was persecuted. Hitler also planned to kill any African-Americans if the German forces eventually conquered America.
