personally i think they do a lot of harm, i think the concept of social work is a good one, but by the nature of the job it either attracts those individuals who r either emotionally scarred themselves (therefore unable to look objectively at things) or the busy body type who enjoy mixing up a fuss. i have had personal experience with them, through no fault of my own, and my sons social worker went out of her way to find things that were not true about me and my family, they even dug around behind my bak and came up with things that were presented to me as FACT, when in fact she had me muddled up with my husbands first wife!! After months of fearing for my sons wellbeing she proudly announced that she knew all along there was no dirt to dig, but that they had a case going on, whereby if we had been prosected for something we did not do (and in her words, she knew this all along) it meant they could also get a conviction on some 1 else who was a danger to children. Now is that justice? to potentially ruin my childs life/education/etc and mine and my husbands all so they can get a conviction on some one else. thats toss and should not be allowed to happen.

While the answer to this question depends on the community, and the internal politics within it, I have to say that at this point, they do more harm.... but it isn't necessarily their fault.
In recent years, funding for social services in general has been cut considerably and the case load for many is insurmountable, and they can only be stretched so thin. And the fact that many of them tend to metaphorically shoot before they ask questions (most likely due to the frustration about their working conditions) doesn't always help.
Once in a while, you may find a person who will go out of his/her way to help in the way it is meant to be, but such people usually don't last long, because the bureaucracy within discourages anyone from taking too much issue, and they either get rid of such people, or change them to comform to the bureaucracy.
Overall, I have seen more people hurt than helped by social services in general.

Some do, some don't...
I believe that not everything should be exactly by the book... I think that the ones who operate void of a proper sense of humanity and throw the book at everything are the ones who screw up the system.
But then again. Most of them are probably afraid to act on their own these days because there is so little room for humanity anymore.
Big brother has everything but a heart apparently...

I think in general most social workers are good.As with all professions there are good ones and bad ones. I like to think that most of them are good.Someone has to look out for the children of these horrible people who mistreat children.I think most of them care, they have heavy workloads and some are gonna get overlooked and that is a shame, but that is gonna happen. When you only have a few people work such a heavy load.

Sometimes. Their hands are tied by bureaucracy, budget, case load and more. How can you help a kid or someone when they have to go back to the environment that created the problems?
They are necessary. Someone has to try! All of society can't just look the other way. Even if they have only a few triumphs it's all worth it.

They do a LOT of good. The only stories we ever hear of are the bad ones because it makes 'good news'. When you think of all the cases they have to handle each year and how many of them we hear about it can only be a small fraction that goes wrong.

They only do good, the only people who think they do harm are those who take advantage of the disabled, young and elderly. The major problem is we do not have enough of them!!!

Seems like it, but we only get to hear about the horror stories. These days when the extended family doesn't really exist, they are probably necessary.
