I used to work for a retail store and they had one of their employees go around and collect the carts, but I think you'd have to ask the store FIRST if they'd be willing to pay you to go find their carts. I wouldn't go get them and bring them back and expect to be paid.

He would have to pay him anything. The carts are the property of the store, and always will be unless he sells them, Carts off the property are technically stolen property and belong to the owner.

If you want though, you could gegotiate with the owner to collect and returen his cart. That way you are an agent of the owner and are acting on his behalf. You would have to negotiate how much each cart is worth to the owner. You also have to remember that the owner carries insurance on the carts for theft. At some dollar value it is cheaper to collect on insurance and buy new carts.

Some people have done this as a business and have done quite well. Others have tried it, they also took the carts themselves that way they had more carts to return and make more money, they are currently making liscense plates at the state pen.

They are store property, so the cart collector should negotiate a fee for his service prior to the collection.

There are businesses that do this, so you likely need a license to prevent fraud.
