I drive a 1991 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat. It has a 5.8 liter 351 Windsor and an automatic 4 speed transmision with overdrive. Recently I have noticed when I shift into reverse, before letting off the brake, it "kicks" real hard into reverse. This truck is a daily driver and this occurs about once every two days or so. What could be wrong? How could I fix this?

First make sure your U-joints and your differential are OK. A lot of the time, this is the problem, not the transmission.

It is quite the possibility that the rear universal joint is going out on the vehicle. It will have slack in it and when you put it in gear it will seemingly "kick" in gear as the slack is taken up in the universal joint. Chances are, you also hear a low whine coming from the rear of the vehicle when going down the road about 40 - 45 mph. The best way to check your U-joints is to block the vehicle where it won't roll. Put it in "N". Then crawl under the vehicle and try to turn the drive shaft with your hands. It WILL move if you apply enough pressure to it. What you will be looking for is slack in the U-joint which will make a clicking noise before the drive shaft actually moves. IF you replace the one U-joint may I strongly suggest you replace all of them otherwise you may find yourself going back under it again in the near future. Let me know what takes place.

I'd suggest a full drain and flush of the trans along with a new filter. Most likely you have a valve in the valve body that is starting to stick. With a bit of luck, a flush and new filter will take care of it. If not, you'll probably need to have the valve body torn down and rebuilt. A good trans mechanic should be able to do that in a few hours for around $300 - $400 or so.

add a bottle of Lucas transmission fix to your transmission, it frees up sticky valves and anything else that isn't working properly, give it a try, it works miracles.

My car sometimes does that and I just hit the clutch again and make sure that its in gear all the way.
