I had the most interesting set of phone calls this week here in Richmond and Glen Allen, Virginia where job recruiters asked not only about my personal life, but about marriage...

I thought these questions were illegal...

They were also nice enough to ask what I was doing when I wasn't job hunting...hmmmm.

It's illegal to ask about age, marital status, children, childcare arrangements, and the like, but employers still do -- or come up with subtle ways to ask, such as by inquiring about when you graduated from high school/college. It's best to address the concern behind the question rather than the question itself by saying something like: "There is nothing about my personal status that would get in the way of my doing a great job for your company." While it may also be tempting to point out the illegality of the question, doing so likely won't endear you to the interviewer.

It is illegal to ask ...there are known cases where "telemarketers" have called and asked for confirmation details of you, your family etc. Under no circumstances should you give out any personal information....the number of cases that are created of Stolen identities are huge and 80% of them start from a "harmless" phone call.

If what they are asking is illegal, then what they are doing is illegal then the information will be used for something illegal...if smells like a rat , looks like a rat then it is a rat...

Above all else guys...common sense when talking over the phone.

I think these questions are illegal too there is a privacy act but i think they ask so they'll know if you can answer a question the way they need to hear it in case they don't think you'll conform to there rules and regulations that's corporate for you....start your own buisness then you don't have to worry about it also it's the only way to make any money and have security in this country

"Just say no!"

They can ask; and I guess a lot of people aren't concerned with sharing some personal details and marriage info with someone interested in them for a good job.

If you aren't comfortable with the questions, don't answer, or just terminate the interview.
